Velvet Underground - “Sunday Morning”

Some days, when I roll through my iTunes library, I come across songs I can’t believe I haven’t posted yet, and “Sunday Morning” is one of those songs. Pleasant and uplifting without being saccharine or obnoxiously bouncy, “Sunday Morning” is actually a perfect song choice for, get this, a Sunday morning.

Plus, when you have Wired asking whether this track is the greatest wake-up tune ever, you know they’ve managed to create a classic.

If I say to you, “Fernet-Branca,” what is it? Yeah, you’ve had it? It’s good isn’t it? It does the job. But, oh the taste.

— Bill Cosby, “Fernet-Branca” from Fat Albert, 1973

Since the Fernet madness has not stopped, I needed to further investigate what the bitters was all about. I stumbled first across the above “Fernet 9/11 Michael Moore spoof” which is all in Italian, but I’m sure is a real knee slapper somewhere in The Boot. I even found an article of nearby folklore from The SF Weekly with “The Myth of Fernet”

“It’s safe to say you could go to any bar in San Francisco and get a different story of Fernet,” Cattani says.

It’s likely that yarns are being spun in bars up and down Haight and Mission streets, in restaurants dotting North Beach, SOMA, and Union Square. Tonight, San Francisco will tip back its share of nearly 50 percent of the Fernet-Branca consumed in the United States

I’m hoping @pauloelias can fill me in on the rest. [Fridays with Fernet is an inevitable tweet-up to come]

*** Update *** just found on @agentgenius’ bio (and the meme goes on)

The Walkmen - “Canadian Girl”

This song, off the band’s album You & Me, is a delightful gem of everything you’ve loved The Walkmen for: the yearning, the ever-so-slightly nasally voice, the melodramatic instrumentation. And while You & Me is slated for release on August 19th, you can buy the whole album early on Amie Street for $5 and the proceeds will go to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Just when you thought The Walkmen couldn’t get more fabulous…

Milk and Cookies

I got an email this evening that left me puzzled for a moment. It read:

Subject: Bernies’s dead, I am so sad

“Damn it! Why does he have to die and rush limbaugh is doing drugs and killing america. I am so broken-hearted right now. A good man is gone forever.”

It took more than a second to register. I thought my friend had meant “Ernie” - the guy who took care of the block were we both lived for a short while in NYC. Puzzled I Googled “Bernie dies” hoping my next guess would not be true. Unfortunately it was - Bernie Mac, actor and comidian dies at age 50

This comes just weeks aftere hearing of George Carlin’s passing. My friend and I were having a conversation, shortly thereafter about Carlin, comedy and “raw talent”. Feeling the loss of such a great talent, we were searching our minds for serious stand-up contenders. No doubt Chris Rock’s name came up, we both agreed that he’s the most likely candidate to fill Carlin’s shoes, being as he’s not afraid of taken huge risks with his work. Mid way through our conversation Bernie Mac came up. We had both seen The Original Kings of Comedy together at least two times. The above clip is one from the performance that has me in tears again tonight for a couple of reasons. The #1 being, getting past the crudeness in which he uses language to tell the story, he does not hold back and let’s complete honesty take over. Taking us into a world of relations between adults and children and explores one man’s frustration. It’s probably the single most funniest moment of this 3.5hr show that left a funny stamp in my heart that tickles every time I think of Milk and Cookies.

Bernie.. You kiled it and you were one of a kind.

Thurston Moore turned 50 today. He and Lee Ranaldo formed Sonic Youth in 1980, which was about seven years before Jordan was born. Jordan and my son Brad both liked Sonic Youths Music, and Brad is about 20 years older than Jordan, which amazed me. Thurston Moore was a very accomplished Guitar Player, which is why I believe Jordan liked his Band. I remember Jordan had this “Sonic Youth” T-Shirt he wore often when we worked on Condos in the Desert. I miss working with you J-Man, we had some great laughs while getting our work done. Your in my thoughts often, I Love You.

I’m...

Today July 10th is my wife Ginger’s birthday. I’m keeping it quick here cause I promised to pick her up from work in about 10 min. She means everything to me for many reasons, the following are a few:

She is a remarkable inspiration in my life. After putting up with me for a while now, I am reminded of this all the time.

Rock solid to lean on. There is nothing like having someone level headed to lean on when you feel out of sorts.

She is a stunning beauty that’s super smart. What a package. I feel she challenges my thinking all the time. This is both good and bad.

Fiercely independant and would have it no other way. Her mother raised her right and she has no problem not being co-dependant.

Has never tried to hard to “change” me. This goes hand in hand with being independent.

Has a child-like need for joy. If you ever get a chance to see her interact with her cat’s you’ll know what I mean.

Can be selfless at all the right times. Her father passed earlier this year, and watching her deal with both him and his family was an act of courage.

Loves the sunshine. What’s not to love about that? I wish I could be taking her to Costa Rica again this year but that’s just not in the cards right now.

Loves Yoga and teaches it with grace. I can see her becoming an amazing inspiration to others.

Loves cake and shiny objects. Wicked sense of humor. Above all there is little that is as important as this.

Billie Holiday - “Lady Sings the Blues”

There’s so much to say about Billie Holiday. I wish I had met her, but not just because she’s one of the most revolutionary jazz singers we know; she’s so real in everything she sings about.

Holiday co-wrote this song, and the most redeeming quality to me is the empowering perspective on what it’s like for a woman to have the blues. There’s also a film about Billie Holiday, played by Diana Ross, titled Lady Sings the Blues.

really do love these shots of old abandoned theaters. So much emotional history is tied up there for me. The story telling in our youth found as early as my childhood swinging on theplay set at the base of the screen at the drive-in theater. I feel like I grew up at the drive-in. Raiders of the lost Arc was probably the first movie I tried to watch all the way through at around 13. By 16 it was were I dated and hung out with my friends with as many cars sometimes we could take up the whole back row. The smell of beer, perfume, popcorn in the darkness. Nothing like it on a hot summer night in the valley. Some of my greatest memories of youth will be foundly kept there.

These days the local independent theaters in San Francisco are all but torn down or turned into a fitness club or what have you. It’s a damn pity but the spirit can still be found in the Castro with vintage style seating, old movie classics, and even the organist playing pre-show.

Like some grumpy old man I long for and bitch about the “good ole days” of catching a flick in a one show theatre like the old Coronet or the Alhambra, yet technology is culture shifting us right out of the old ways of movie watching.
